King of POP Michael Jackson dead at 50

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that law enforcement and city officials have confirmed that Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, died today after suffering what has been reported as a cardiac arrest. Jackson was 50. According to reports, Jackson was not breathing when paramedics were called to his Los Angeles home this afternoon, June 25th. Paramedics at the scene performed CPR on the singer, who was then transported to the UCLA Medical Center. Jackson arrived at the hospital in a deep coma; attempts to resuscitate him failed as he was completely unresponsive. He was declared dead at 2:26 p.m. PST.

(Look back at Jackson’s life and career, in photos.)

Immediately following news of Jackson’s hospitalization, an unnamed member of the Jackson family told TMZ that the singer was in “really bad shape,” with Jackson’s father Joe adding that his son was “not doing so well.” In recent years, rumors of ill health have dogged Jackson, though the singer nor his reps ever confirmed any reports. (Read the music world’s reactions to Jackson’s death.)

Jackson was in Los Angeles for rehearsals for his This Is It! run of concerts at London’s O2 Arena, scheduled to begin on July 13th and run through the early months of 2010. As reported in the new issue of Rolling Stone, sources say that Jackson was frequently absent from the show’s rehearsals, and the run’s opening four shows were postponed for what an AEG Live rep called the “massive and technically complex” nature of the show.

As a testament to Jackson’s appeal despite years out of the musical spotlight, all 50 shows of the London run quickly sold out. Jackson is survived by his three children and an immeasurable musical legacy.

Evanescence members form We Are The Fallen

Booted players team with American Idol singer
Joe Bosso, Wed 24 Jun 2009, 6:38 pm BST

Three ex-members of the goth-rock band Evanescence, all given the heave-ho by frontwoman Amy Lee, have formed a new group called We Are The Fallen, and they've picked American Idol finalist Carly Smithson as their singer.

The Dublin-born Smithson joins guitarist/songwriter Ben Moody, guitarist John Lecompt and drummer Rocky Gray in We Are The Fallen. (Bassist Marty O'Brien completes the lineup.)

The name game
Their name, while perhaps a sly reference to Evanescence's 2003 breakthrough album Fallen, has already gotten them in a bit of hot water. Originally the band called themelves The Fallen, but a ceast-and-desist order from another group with that name lead them to lengthen their moniker.

"There's not really an Evanescence now. It's Amy Lee playing...with a bunch of other guys hired to play our parts" ex-Evanescence guitarist (Ben Moody)

So now they're We Are The Fallen, and they've just debuted their first single Bury Me Alive. Can't we all just get along?

With We Are The Fallen going one way and Evanescence going another (Amy Lee is cutting a new album with Terry Balsamo on guitar and Tim McCord on bass; no word yet on a drummer), the question remains: can the two groups co-exist peacefully?

"We outgrew each other. Very few bands have been able to maintain their original members forever" (Amy Lee)

"We wish them the best," says Moody of Lee's new lineup. Still, he adds: "There's not really an Evanescence now. It's Amy Lee playing as Evanescence with a bunch of other guys hired to play our parts."

Lee describes it as "a difficult situation, as is every dramatic situation our band has gone through. We outgrew each other. Very few bands have been able to maintain their original members forever."

Doesn't sound like a double-bill we'll be seeing anytime soon.

Joe Satriani switches to Marshall?

Finally satch using marshal like mostly rock guitarist use,, here is the news about it.

Despite a longstanding relationship with Peavey that has yielded the highly-regarded JSX signature amp, Joe Satriani appears to have switched to Marshall backline on Chickenfoot's European tour.

A news release that MusicRadar received this morning from Marshall Amplification reads as follows:

"Marshall Amplification plc is pleased to announce that Joe Satriani will be using a Marshall backline for Chickenfoot. The Supergroup, made up of four rock legends, started the European leg of their world tour 20 June and will be heading back over to the states in August to continue.

"Joe contacted Marshall amps prior to the first show at the Nova Rock festival in order to check out some new Marshall gear. Marshall took some amps to the rehearsals, and Joe loved the tone of the JVM 410.

"What can I say? I guess I'm crazy... But, I'm just looking to achieve the best guitar sound every moment I'm plugged in, and that brought me back to Marshall Amps." Joe Satriani (Chris Vinnicombe, musicradar, Tue 23 Jun 2009, 12:44 pm BST)

"Joe used the JVM410 for the show at the Nova Rock festival and will be visiting the Marshall factory this week to have a look around and try out different speaker cabinets.

"Chickenfoot recently released their debut album and has taken the states by storm, going in at number 4 on the Billboard Album charts."

Where this leaves his relationship with Peavey remains to be seen. If you have tickets to any of the upcoming Chickenfoot shows and you catch a glimpse of Satch's backline, let us know what he's using!

KISS “Days From Finishing” New Album

Kiss are wrapping up their first new LP since 1998’s Psycho Circus, guitarist Paul Stanley revealed in a post on the band’s official Website yesterday. “We’re about four days from finishing the new Kiss album. Eleven tracks, and it IS everything I’ve told you. It IS classic. It IS all written within the band. And IT ROCKS BIG TIME!,” Stanley writes.

In news that will likely distress old school Kiss fans, Stanley also revealed that guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer will both handle lead vocal duties at some points on the album. “The songs, sound and playing will knock your socks off. You will all be as proud and excited as we all are,” Stanley added. When Rock Daily spoke to bassist Gene Simmons in March, the God of Thunder described the LP as having a “classic ’70s rock & roll vibe. Meat and Potatoes.” “There’s nothing to prove to anybody,” Simmons said. “We’re not interested in musical trends or anything else. We’re too long in the tooth for that.” No release date has been announced yet.

However, when Kiss do release their new album, it will apparently be a Walmart exclusive. Simmons revealed the news to an unlikely source — actress Denise Richards — during a Sirius XM visit. The promotional blitz will include Walmart dedicating an area of their stores to the band and dubbing it “Kiss Korner,” Simmons told Richards in the video posted at Blabbermouth. Rumors of a deal along the lines of AC/DC’s massively successful exclusive with the retail giant first emerged after Simmons and Stanley attended an Arkansas Walmart shareholders meeting on June 5th.
